Joe Curtin is VP, Chief Underwriter, IL Production for Gen Re’s Individual Life business. He leads facultative underwriting production, overseeing high quality decision making, team development, and alignment with enterprise underwriting strategy. In this role, Joe drives innovation across underwriting tools and processes, shapes underwriting philosophy and risk frameworks, and partners closely with clients to deliver strong underwriting outcomes.
Previously, Joe served as VP, Head of Underwriting Relationships, where he led strategic client partnerships, underwriting program assessments, and the client audit program. He has also held several senior underwriting and leadership roles across Gen Re, RGA, and Symetra, bringing more than 20 years of industry experience spanning direct and reinsurance environments.
Joe is actively involved in industry advancement, serving on the ALU Education Committee and the AHOU Program Committee. He frequently represents Gen Re at major industry events and has presented on behavioral economics and underwriting topics at conferences including the Texas Wide Underwriting Conference, the Farm Bureau Actuarial Conference, and to the Institute of Actuaries of Japan (IAJ) at the Society of Actuaries Conference.
He holds a degree in Business Management from Western Washington University and a Behavioral Economics Certification from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. His professional designations include Certified FALU, FLMI, AFSI, ARA, and ACS.
