Role Summary

The Senior Writer sits on ACLI’s Public Affairs team and develops public policy- and advocacy-focused
content that clearly and persuasively communicates complex regulatory and legislative issues. The
Senior Writer collaborates with leaders in the organization to find information needed to tell compelling
stories. They ensure content and messaging are aligned with overall strategy and organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate policy positions into accessible narratives for varied audiences
  • Produce explainers, backgrounders, op-eds, decks, blog posts, testimonies, and digital content
  • Manage the copy editing and proofing of written materials and decks
  • Adapt core narratives to specific platforms, and apply generative engine optimization (GEO) best practices to improve discoverability
  • Use analytics and audience insights to inform writing and refinement
  • Collaborate with public affairs, government affairs, policy and legal teams on messaging and materials

Qualifications

  • Experience in policy communications, public affairs, journalism or related field
  • Exceptional writing and editing ability with a portfolio of versatile, audience-focused work and experience with policy or regulatory subject matter
  • Excels at producing high-quality work on tight deadlines
  • Familiarity with legislative and regulatory processes
  • Comfort with digital channels, analytics, and AI-assisted content tools

Team and Work Environment

This role is part of ACLI’s Public Affairs team and follows the organization’s standard hybrid work schedule: in-office Tuesday through Thursday at ACLI’s headquarters (300 New Jersey Ave NW, Washington, DC), with remote work on Mondays and Fridays.

Salary Range

$115,000 - $150,000 depending on experience

The American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) is seeking an experienced and collaborative professional to join our Policy & Legal team as Assistant Vice President, Life & Annuity Policy. This position is responsible for the management and coverage of all assigned issues affecting the life insurance and annuity industry. The successful candidate will lead policy development and implementation for life insurance and annuity products, staff assigned committees and task forces and build strong relationships with member company representatives. This role provides technical and substantive assistance to both internal ACLI staff and member companies, as well as supporting government relations and public affairs initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and analyze federal and state legislative and regulatory proposals and policy trends impacting the life insurance industry.
  • Identify and analyze emerging issues, assist in developing industry consensus, and communicate key issues within ACLI and to members.
  • Serve as staff liaison for ACLI committees, subcommittees, task forces, and working groups; prepare agendas, facilitate meetings, and document outcomes.
  • Develop advocacy arguments, conduct research, and prepare testimony, comments, and background materials for legislative and regulatory proposals.
  • Represent ACLI and the industry at hearings, conferences, and meetings with government officials, the media, and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and maintain awareness of ACLI’s strategic priorities.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 5–10 years of relevant experience, with strong knowledge of life insurance and annuity product issues and experience working with government or standard-setting bodies.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple stakeholders and facilitate agreement among parties with diverse views.
  • Experience in insurance laws and regulations impacting life insurance and annuity products is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to coach and mentor junior staff, and to transform complex issues into clear, persuasive written documents.
