Race Supports Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation

Washington, D.C., (May 11, 2017) —The American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) is proud to sponsor the 36th Annual Capital Challenge on May 17. The race begins at 8 a.m. in Anacostia Park in Washington, D.C. The three-mile road race will benefit the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, an organization whose mission includes providing life-changing guide dogs to blind veterans.

Each year, hundreds of runners participate in this premier Washington, D.C. event. Teams from the legislative, executive and judicial branches of the federal government, news media organizations and the U.S. military participate in support of the foundation’s important work.

Supporting sponsors include ACLI member companies: Guardian, Hannover Life Reassurance Company of America, John Hancock, MetLife, Nationwide, New York Life, OneAmerica, Prudential Insurance, TransAmerica, USAA and Western & Southern Financial Group. Roll Call also is a sponsor.

“The life insurance industry proudly sponsors this special race to bring together individuals from all parts of official Washington to help a noble cause,” said Governor Dirk Kempthorne, president & CEO, American Council of Life Insurers. “Life insurers that provide 75 million American families with financial security products are honored to support this non-partisan competition.”

This year’s celebrity runner, courtesy of John Hancock’s Elite Athlete Ambassador program, is 2016 Olympic Marathon bronze medalist Galen Rupp. Rupp finished second in this year’s Boston Marathon.

Rupp will start runners on their way as the official “whistle-blower.” He will then join the race from the back of the pack.

“In this year of my first Boston Marathon, I’m also excited to participate in my first ACLI Capital Challenge,” said Rupp. “To be part of this race - that is such a D.C. tradition and that benefits a worthy cause – is something that I’ve been looking forward to.”
