Race Supports Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation

Washington, D.C., (May 10, 2016) —The American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) is proud to sponsor the 35th Annual Capital Challenge three-mile road race on May 18. The race begins at 8 a.m. in Anacostia Park in Washington, DC. The race will benefit the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, an organization whose mission includes providing life-changing guide dogs to blind veterans.

The ACLI Capital Challenge has become a premier Washington, D.C. event. Each year, hundreds of runners from news media organizations, the legislative, executive and judicial branches of the federal government and the U.S. military participate in support of this worthy cause.

Supporting sponsors include ACLI member companies: Guardian, Hannover Life Re, John Hancock, MassMutual, MetLife, Nationwide, New York Life, OneAmerica, Prudential, RGA, Transamerica, USAA and Western & Southern. CQ Roll Call also is a supporting sponsor.

“Military veterans deserve our respect, praise and admiration for their sacrifice to keep America safe. The Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation makes an important difference in the lives of veterans and many others who are blind and visually impaired,” said ACLI President and CEO Dirk Kempthorne. “The ACLI, which is dedicated to supporting 75 million American families who rely on life insurers’ products for financial and retirement security, is also proud to support the Foundation’s inspirational work.

This year’s celebrity runner, courtesy of John Hancock’s Elite Athlete Ambassador program, is Meb Keflezighi. He is the only athlete to win the Boston Marathon, New York Marathon and an Olympic medal. At age 40, Keflezighi finished second at the recent Olympic Trials, earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team.

Keflezighi will start runners on their way as the official “whistle-blower.” He will then join the race from the back of the pack.

“This is my third year starting and running in the ACLI Capital Challenge,” said Keflezighi. “I love running in D.C., and this is one of my favorite races because of the camaraderie among the runners and the important cause uniting us.”
