Washington, D.C., (May 21, 2014) — More than 660 runners representing 99 teams from the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the federal government and the media came together Wednesday morning to compete in the 33rd Annual ACLI Capital Challenge road race.

The Capital Challenge raised $45,000 to benefit the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, an organization whose mission includes providing life-changing guide dogs to blind veterans. The American Council of Life Insurers was the Capital Challenge’s lead sponsor for the 11th year.  Supporting sponsors included ACLI member companies: Allianz, Guardian, Hannover Life Re, ING, John Hancock, MassMutual, MetLife, Nationwide, New York Life, OneAmerica, Prudential, RGA, Transamerica, USAA, and Western and Southern. CQ Roll Call was also a supporting sponsor.

Patrick Fernandez of the Coast Guard won the race for the second straight year, finishing the three-mile course in Anacostia Park in 14:59.  Rep. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) repeated as the fastest member of Congress, and Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) extended her reign as the fastest female member.  Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) repeated as the fastest male senator, while Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) was the fastest female senator.

Other notable participants included White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, Counselor to the President John Podesta, and three-time Olympian Shalane Flanagan, who served as the race’s official “whistle blower.”
