New York Life Chairman and CEO Ted Mathas named ACLI Chairman

WASHINGTON — The American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) today elected its Chairman, officers and Board of Directors at the 2020 ACLI Annual Conference.

ACLI’s member companies are leading providers of solutions that help 90 million American families meet their financial and retirement security needs. The Chairman and Board of Directors lead the industry association and develop and advance policies that empower all Americans with access to information and affordable tools for financial certainty and protection.

New York Life Chairman & CEO Ted Mathas was elected ACLI Chairman for 2021. He succeeds Principal Financial Group® Chairman, President & CEO Dan Houston, who will serve as ACLI Immediate Past Chair for the coming year.

“The global pandemic has magnified financial anxieties and economic inequities in our nation and amplified the need for action to address them,” said ACLI President and CEO Susan Neely. “Under Ted Mathas and our board’s leadership, our industry will be driving public policies to help all Americans access greater financial certainty and security. The guarantees made by life insurers also make the industry an important source of capital for America’s economy.”                                                

ACLI also selected J. Scott Davison, Chairman, President & CEO of OneAmerica Financial Partners, Inc., as Chairman-elect. He will become ACLI Chairman in October 2021. John Schlifske, Chairman, President & CEO of The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, was named Chairman-elect Designate and will become ACLI Chairman in October 2022.
