News Release

Washington, D.C., (May 1, 2014) —The American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) is proud to present the 33rd Annual ACLI Capital Challenge three-mile road race. The event begins at 8:00 AM on May 21 in Anacostia Park and will benefit the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, an organization whose mission includes providing life-changing guide dogs to blind veterans.

Five-person running teams from media organizations and the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the federal government will compete in this premier Washington, D.C. race.

“The Capital Challenge is one of Washington’s favorite events,” said ACLI President and CEO Dirk Kempthorne. “Where else can members of Congress, Administration officials, federal judges, journalists and the military come together for a morning of fun, physical fitness and fundraising for a great cause. ACLI is proud to sponsor this race.”

This race marks ACLI’s 11th year as lead sponsor of the Capital Challenge. Supporting sponsors include ACLI member companies: Allianz, Guardian, Hannover Life, ING, John Hancock, MassMutual, MetLife, Nationwide, New York Life, One America, Prudential, RGA, Transamerica, USAA, and Western and Southern,. CQ Roll Call is also a supporting sponsor.

This year’s celebrity runner is Shalane Flanagan, courtesy of John Hancock. Flanagan, 32, is a three-time Olympian who won the bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2008 Beijing Games. She was the top American woman finisher at the 2014 Boston Marathon, finishing seventh.  Flanagan will serve as the official “whistle blower” to start the Capital Challenge, and then she will jump in and run from the back of the pack.
