After receiving more than 775 responses to a request for information on lifetime income options for participants and beneficiaries in retirement plans, the Departments of Treasury and Labor are considering whether to facilitate access to and use of lifetime income and whether this would enhance retirement security for plan participants. In addition, the Administration is proposing to make it easier for individuals to annuitize a portion of their savings. This session will explore what this might mean for life insurers and their products offered through employer-sponsored retirement plans and through IRAs and nonqualified arrangements. This session also will include a discussion on the long-awaited guidance issued by the Treasury on tax treatment of reserves for variable annuities under a new NAIC guideline which became effective on December 31, 2009.
